Why Viola Davis Will 'Go To Her Grave' Saying Annalise Keating And Olivia Pope Are The Greatest Characters On Television

The premiere of the sixth and final season of How To Get Away With Murder is only two days away, but its leading lady Viola Davis is already reflecting on the show’s legacy in an interview with Variety.

Davis, who became the first Black woman (and woman of color) to win the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series for her portrayal of Annalise Keating in 2015, heaped praise on her Shondaland alter-ego and another memorable TV character.

“I still believe, and I will say this until I go to my grave, that Annalise Keating and Olivia Pope are the greatest characters on TV,” Davis told Variety. “And I say that because the people here are not writing tentatively for people of color. And I see some of the characters that people eat up–that they love–that are just not deep, are not drawn-out; they’re everything that people feel comfortable with–even biopics, maybe even some things that I’ve been involved in.”

Davis, who was again nominated in the Lead Actress category at the Emmys this past Sunday (Sept 22) said that she hopes for “a level of personal growth and redemption” on Annalise’s part by the time the legal potboiler concludes.

The sixth and final season of How To Get Away With Murder premieres on Thursday, Sept 26 on ABC.
